Diglossia in Arabic-speaking communities is manifested through the use of two distinct language varieties, which are not mutually comprehensible. These include Al-lugha Alfusha – Modern Standard Arabic – and Al-lugha Al-ammiya – referred to as ‘colloquial’ Arabic (Ferguson, 1959).

This issue of diglossia in Arabic could be understood best as an interdisciplinary issue of inquiry. Diglossia is the sociolinguistic phenomenon that exists when a language has two different varieties that are used in different domains of language use. Arabic is one of the typical examples of this phenomenon in world languages today. Thus in those diglossic societies which are also characterized by extreme inequality of social classes, most people are not proficient in speaking the high dialect, and if the high dialect is grammatically different enough, as in the case of Arabic diglossia, these uneducated classes cannot understand most of the public speeches that they might hear on television and radio. the ways in which diglossia along with cultural perceptions of literacy influenced the literacy acquisition of four native Arabic speakers from different parts of the Arab world. Before discussing diglossia and its influence on literacy acquisition, it is important to define what literacy and diglossia mean in the context of this study.
